Retro Recipe Fave: Survival Bars

Today is my son’s birthday, and because 40-something men are hard to buy for, I went to my old recipe box in search of something that might make him feel like a kid again. And there it was, on a splatter-stained card. Survival Bars. No telling how many pans of Survival Bars I made when my kids were little, but it’s been years since I pulled that recipe out of the box.

Who knows how this sweet treat got its name? Maybe it’s because these bars are calorie and protein dense, the kind of treat that has some actual substance buried in all the sugar. Back then, we didn’t give sugar a second thought. (Remember making a pitcher of Kool-Aid with a whole cup of sugar? Gahhh!) So yes, my children consumed vast quantities of Survival Bars, and whaddya know? They survived!

Now, unless you’re lost in the woods for 2 days with only a pan of Survival Bars, I’m not promising these sweet morsels will really sustain your life. But they certainly will tease your taste buds, and they might even make you feel like a kid again. Certainly worth a try!
